Which companies working with Lower East Side community organizations are hiring the most local employees? That question was answered last night during an annual report to Community Board 3 from the LES Employment Network (LESEN).
The network consists of several non-profit groups with job placement programs. Several years ago, these organizations came together to coordinate their efforts across the neighborhood. At a meeting of CB3’s economic development committee, representatives from LESEN said 242 people had been hired through the network partners from March of 2012 through the end of August. 98 were local hires. The average hourly wage was $11.10. Here’s a breakdown of the most active employers:
- S&E Hotels/BD Hotel Group (Bowery, Ludlow, Jane, Marlton hotels): 52 hires, 9 local
- Whole Foods (Union Square, Midtown): 34 hires, 11 local
- Astor Wines & Spirits: 22 hires, 10 local
- 7-Eleven (LES, Midwood): 16 hires, 7 local
- Hester Street Fair (seasonal): 10 hires, 4 local
David Garza, executive director of Henry Street Settlement, and Gaspar Caro, LESEN coordinator, briefed the community board last night. They noted that Educational Alliance and Grand Street Settlement have joined the existing network partners – University Settlement, Henry Street Settlement, GOLES, Chinatown Manpower, Chinese American Planning Council and The Door. Garza said the consortium recently received two more years of funding from JP Morgan/Chase to support their efforts.
In recent weeks, meetings have been held with Extell Development about the prospect of using the network for hiring at its massive South Street residential and commercial project now under construction. Garza noted that Grand Street’s involvement is important since that settlement house is the lead community partner for Essex Crossing, the large project on the former Seward Park urban renewal site. They also have a partnership with Hotel Indigo, the new 295-room property opening later this year at 180 Orchard St.
