Let’s catch up with this week’s Lower East Side food news:
Beginning June 10, Russ & Daughters will be celebrating New Catch Holland Herring Season. You’ll be able to buy them by the piece in the shop at 179 East Houston St. or sample a special herring pairing menu in the cafe at 127 Orchard St. Finally, on June 24th, there’s the annual Herring Pairing at the Astor Center. The guest chef this year is Fung Tu’s Jonathan Tu, who is still basking in the glory of his two star New York Times review. Tickets are available here.
Birds & Bubbles on Forsyth Street will be celebrating the Memorial Day holiday on Monday with a low country boil in the backyard (one of the nicest outdoor spaces on the LES). Guests will partake in a shrimp feast with sausage, corn on the cob, seasonal slaw, freshly baked bread and sparkling wine. Cost: $95.
The Village Voice profiles Cafe Katja, which is in the middle of its always popular White Asparagus Festival.
Melissa O’Donnell of Thelma on Clinton talks about the ups and downs of running a restaurant on the Lower East Side.

And finally, a reminder. Orchard Street Loves 2nd Avenue fundraiser is coming up next week!
