Beginning today, we’ll be posting a weekly video installment from “Feed Me a Story,” the project created by multimedia artists Theresa Loong and Laura Nova that we featured last month here. It is part of the FABLES Public Art project produced by FABnyc that kicked off in May.
Along with a giant mural (at First Street Green Park) made up of photos of the eight different family dishes they selected from seniors on the Lower East Side, the project includes videos of the residents preparing the dishes and sharing their personal history. The featured recipes include recipes made by Jewish, Italian, Chinese and Puerto Rican families based in the neighborhood.
We’re starting off with number eight, “Wai Man’s Stuffed Chinese Eggplant.” The Feed Me a Story team notes: Wai Man makes Stuffed Chinese Eggplant with mixed fish, shrimp and pork. Eggplant is very healthy and nutritious and it can help with blood circulation. This is a recipe that her grandmother taught her when she was 20 years old.
