A non-profit organization, the Center for Urban Pedagogy, debuts something called a “Zoning Tool Kit” this week at a series of workshops on the Lower East Side.
In an effort to help communities become more involved with land use issues, the organization designed the program, called “What is Zoning?” to demystify the arcane world of city planning. From the center’s web site:
Inside the toolbox are infrastructure tiles, a two-sided gameboard, and hundreds of colorful plastic blocks that stack up to break down the basics of zoning. Lay out a brand new city, or max out your lot while you build up to topics like inclusionary and contextual zoning (and the dreaded Floor Area Ratio). A guidebook uses simple diagrams to explain how zoning works, and provides step-by-step instructions on how to lead your own workshops.
There will be a party to celebrate the launch on Wednesday and free workshops on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Click here for more info.
