C.O.W., the Celebration of Whimsy Theatre, is shuttering its space at 21 Clinton St. Here’s the announcement that just went out to supporters of the arts organization:
After 3 YEARS IN BUSINESS, much angst and deliberation with greedy New York landlords, it is with a heavy heart that we announce The Celebration Of Whimsy Theater will be CLOSING ITS DOORS for business on May 31st, 2016. The business is up for sale with all of its current equipment, licenses and amenities. If you know anyone who is looking to purchase a Full Service Theater & Bar please contact us directly.
The 3500 sq. ft. basement space was previously home to the legendary Living Theatre until 2013 when that institution could no longer pay the rent on Clinton Street. Stephen Michael Rondel and Tyler Maganzini reactivated the theater as a rental venue for a wide variety of performing arts organizations. Rondel’s New Acting Company was forced out of its Sullivan Street home after 12 years when the Children’s Aid Society sold its building.
In the weeks ahead, they’re trying to keep the revenue flowing:
Our theater has been serving the downtown community since 2013 with a variety of events ranging from Off-Off Broadway theatrical performances, live music, sketch comedy, film screenings, burlesque, stand up, drag, variety shows and much more. This popular venue welcomes corporate meetings, lectures and workshops, birthday parties, graduations, wedding receptions and private events. Our full service bar and cafe offers a variety of libations and snacks for before during and after all performances and events.
