In November, we reported renovations under way at 140 Orchard, at the corner of Rivington Street. This weekend, the new tenant revealed itself as Corner Grocers, a small food/convenience store that also sells lottery tickets, serves as a Western Union outlet and offers “health and beauty aids,” as well as vegan and organic items.
Some of the shelves are already stocked with snack foods, and a meat/dairy case is plugged in and ready to load up. Workers on site Sunday afternoon said the store would be open within “a week or two.”
The building, which contains walk-up apartments on the upper floors, changed hands in 2010. After remaining vacant for some time, the interior of the ground floor has been completely gutted, with new floors, lighting, plumbing and electrical work, according to records on file with the city. A 500-square-foot space that included a full basement was recently advertised for rent at $5,200/month.
