After learning the sad news that longtime Lower East Side boutique TG-170 is closing, we stopped by to speak with owner Terri Gillis to find out why she’s calling it quits. Gillis told us she hasn’t had enough foot traffic since moving to 243 Broome Street a year ago (she was forced out of her former location at 170 Ludlow by escalating rents).
Gillis was optimistic about the move but has been disappointed by daytime sales. “It’s not a good corner,” she said. “I have days where I don’t sell anything.” Gillis also said the economy hasn’t recovered enough to keep someone like her going, so far off the beaten path down here.
She said she’ll take some time to figure out what’s next. In the meantime, make sure to stop by and take advantage of her clearance sale. Almost everything is under $100, jeans are a steal at $50 (including J Brand) and her gorgeous custom jewelry is 50% off. TG-170 is open noon to 8pm. It is located at 243 Broome Street.
