Weekend Music Picks

Must Read

Here are musician Ken Beasley’s top music picks on the Lower East Side for this weekend:

Indian Rebound

INDIAN REBOUND – Fri, July 1 | 8PM at Cake Shop

Talk about starting them young! Ethan Levenson & John Kallen of Indian Rebound are in High School, yet they’ve already come up with a winning formula and are a year into rocking up and down the NYC circuit. Levenson plays guitar and sings, and Kallen manages the drums. They’ve put out a couple singles, and although they construct a quality lo-fi sound, they surprise with the depth of their writing and the cheekiness to slip in some very “synthy” keyboard chorus, just for the hell of it. $10// 152 Ludlow St.

SIERRA NOBLE Sat, July 2 | 10PM at the Living Room

Sierra Noble

Canadian musician Sierra Noble first came onto the scene as a young fiddle prodigy. Now a performing veteran at the age of 21, Noble has become equally known for her exceptional voice and songwriting skills. Playing an interesting mix of country, Celtic, and even rock, she has been requested for concerts all over the world, and has opened for a range of superstar acts that include Paul McCartney and Bon Jovi.

As lovely as her voice is, Noble is not embarrassed to show off her truly virtuosic skills on the fiddle. She composes energetic instrumentals that can sound like foot stomping bluegrass one moment and exotically middle eastern the next. FREE //154 Ludlow St.

THE MOVEMENT – Sun, July 3 | 9PM at the Mercury Lounge

The Movement

Originally formed in Columbia, SC, the reggae-rock band The Movement saw a fair amount of local success, opening for the likes of  G. Love, The Wailers, and Common, just to name a few. After some restructuring and departures over the years, the remaining members relocated to Philadelphia, and teamed up with producer Chris DiBeneditto. They have since added new members and produced the labor of love “Set Sail.”

The band is tight, and the punchy island songs are well crafted, but more than anything, they’re just fun to listen to and will get you grooving properly. Now, if only there was an indoor beach at the Mercury.  $10//217 E. Houston St.

Splitting his time between performing and producing, contributor Ken Beasley primarily plays with his own roots/rock band, Ken Beasley & Co., as well as the power punk outfit, Missy Sport, while also curating the Underground at the Abrons music series on the Lower East Side.
