Devotees of the “Fake Shelly Silver” twitter feed probably noticed this item posted a short time ago:
Now, um, about that Assembly leadership coup… I’m sure the @NewYorkPost will be publishing a correction some time today…
In spite of all kinds of bluster from the tabloids, our man in Albany was easily re-elected Speaker yesterday. No mea culpa from the Post just yet. We linked to the Daily News’ account earlier this morning. Here’s more from their rather brief story:
All that post-election talk about a possible uprising against Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver apparently didn’t get through to Assembly Democrats. They voted overwhelmingly today to back Silver for another term as speaker. “It was big,” Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan (D-Queens) said of the vote for Silver, which took place in a closed-door meeting of Assembly Democrats. Silver’s election was not challenged by any other Democrat, she added.
A few more details from LoHud.com:
Some lawmakers and staff members showed their support for Silver’s re-election by wearing buttons that said, “Silver is Gold.” Silver has been speaker since 1994. “I don’t think you can find someone who’s got the amount of experience and institutional knowledge that Shelly has,” said Assemblyman Joseph Morelle, D-Irondequoit, Monroe County. “It takes someone who has a steady hand and somebody who doesn’t give sound bites and tells people what they want to hear.”
Last night’s vote was unofficial. The full Assembly won’t weigh in until after the first of the year. But given the Democrats’ overwhelming majority, the final outcome is not in doubt. Governor-elect Andrew Cuomo is meeting with Assembly Democrats today.
