Community Board 3’s SPURA task force will not meet again until October.  The committee trying to reach a consensus on a plan for the Seward Park Urban Renewal Area was supposed to reconvene this month, after a summer hiatus. But CB3 District Manager Susan Stetzer said city agencies, working with the community board, asked for more time to pull together new data that will help inform the deliberations.

An urban planner, John Shapiro, has completed three out of four mediated conversations among panel members. Since he’s only being paid for one more session, Stetzer indicated, the NYC Economic Development Corp. felt it was best to wait for the new information.

At the last meeting, in July, Shapiro and community board leaders noted there are still major differences among committee members. They suggested community organizations use the hiatus to consider whether they’re truly prepared to make concessions necessary to break the 43-year impasse.

The Seward Park site was bulldozed in 1967, in the name of urban renewal. While part of the site has been redeveloped, disagreements about types of housing (low income, middle income, market rate) have prevented new construction on five remaining parcels.
