More on the Relocation of M. Schames & Sons

Must Read

We just returned from the M Schames & Sons paint store on Essex Street. The Schames family wouldn’t let us take any pictures inside due to the very likely prospect that the ordeal over their building, 3 Essex, will end up in court. We were told they will be set up at 90 Delancey in a few weeks.

The space, advertised on Misrahi Realty’s web site, is right next door to Trinagle Optical, between Orchard and Ludlow.

90 Delancey; from Misrahi's listing.

Apparently, they’d like to return to Essex Street once repairs are finished. They’re talking with engineers about what it’s going to take to stabilize the building. Last November, the Department of Buildings determined the structure next door, the former home of Dembitzer Brothers Electronics, was unstable. Over a period of several weeks, workers dismantled the crumbling building, seemingly, brick by brick.

These two lots together would make an attractive development site. On the other hand, there will likely be pressure to save 3 Essex, a building which might not be architecturally significant but (some would argue) has historical value in a neighborhood rapidly losing its low-rise character. We’ll be watching to see what happens…
