This morning the Landmarks Preservation Commission will consider protecting a few Lower East Side buildings, including the Loews Canal Theater. You can see a portion of the 1927 jewel above (it’s the one in the middle with the shuttered electronics store below). Tonight, CB3 will hold its monthly full board meeting. And the people behind the LES’s new CSA will be holding an informational meeting. Look for a high today of 59 with more showers. We should see the sun again by Thursday.
Just to clarify. The Landmarks Preservation Commission will “calendar” several LES buildings, including Loew’s Canal Theater.
If the commissioners agree to calendar a building (and they usually do so, following staff recommendations), it is the beginning of a research process.
At some time in the future, the building may have a hearing, at which time the public can testify.
At some time in the later future, the Commission may actually DESIGNATE the building a landmark.
Buildings have some protection during the time between calendaring and designation.
Understand that designation might be a long time in the future.
