Tonight, there’s an information fair for parents to learn more about the Pre-K and Kindergarten options in the neighborhood. It’s sponsored by State Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh, Senator Daniel Squadron and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer. Here’s the letter they sent out:
Dear Parents:
We are writing to invite you to the District 1 Elementary Schools Pre-K and Kindergarten Information Fair on Wednesday, January 20th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at P.S. 20 Anna Silver located at 166 Essex Street. The fair will provide an opportunity to learn about educational opportunities available in elementary schools in District 1, and a chance to learn about a new admissions policy our offices urged the Department of Education (DOE) to adopt.
As many of you know, the pre-K and kindergarten admissions process in District 1 has been an issue of great concern in the community. Working together, our offices were able to propose a fair solution that works for parents and children, and promotes equitable access to quality education. Last month, the DOE announced it would change its admissions policy for District 1 students.
A key aspect of the new process is that District 1 parents whose children are enrolled in pre-kindergarten will be able to re-enroll their children in kindergarten in the same school without reapplying. In order to maintain the diversity we strive for in District 1 schools, it is vital that all parents fully understand the implications of the new policy. We encourage families who are seeking Pre-K and Kindergarten placement for their children in District 1 in September 2010 to attend this important informational fair.
Sincerely,
Daniel Squadron, State Senator, 25th District
Brian Kavanagh, Assemblymember, 74th District
Scott M. Stringer, Manhattan Borough President
