You may have heard about the latest show at Ramiken Crucible, the offbeat gallery at 389 Grand Street. The blogosphere is buzzing about “Ideal Pole,” which features two caged baby white tigers! The group installation was curated by Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard. Gallerist talked to Brooklyn-based designer Ms. Fitz, who designed custom-made collars for Sonia and Tania, the baby tigers. Apparently, they’ve been somewhat uncooperative. Ms. Fitz explains:
We had a performance piece where I styled the tigers in their capes and collars. They tried to eat them, but that’s OK! They’re tigers! We’ll be doing it again at 6 p.m. this Saturday. They looked beautiful! But it was also a bit of a statement about how style can be liberating as well as restrictive.
The tigers are on loan from animal rescue specialists Stump Hill Farm in Ohio. As Gallerist notes, “the show has a number of eye-catching aspects—brightly colored walls, fancy adult diapers, Richard Kern photos (a topless model who poses with needles, a condom and a substance that appears to be semen).” The tigers will be on display through June 3rd.
