Lunar New Year Festivities Kick Off in Chinatown

Lunar New Year will be officially celebrated Tuesday, February 17. The celebrations continue in Chinatown throughout the month and into March.

The annual Firecracker Ceremony and Cultural Festival kicks off the Year of the Horse on Tuesday in Sara D. Roosevelt Park (at Grand Street). The event takes place between 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

On February 28 it’s “Super Saturday” in Chinatown, in which dozens of lion dance teams parade through the neighborhood, visiting local businesses along the way You can catch the action all day, but especially in the afternoon. It’s a great day to see the lion dance troupes up close and to take the opportunity to visit one of Chinatown’s many restaurants for a lunar new year lunch.

The biggest event of the season in Chinatown is the Lunar New Year Parade. It’s taking place this year on Sunday, March 1 at 1 p.m. The starting point is Mott Street. The parade passes Confucius Plaza before heading down East Broadway before ending up in Sara D. Roosevelt Park.
