Think!Chinatown has announced it will end its “Chinatown Night Market” event series at Forsyth Plaza this Friday, August 15th from *:00 – 11:30pm. The summer series started in 2021 as a project for pandemic recovery and quickly grew into a community-centric event focused on live cultural performances with artist vendors, and expanded into a Night Market that included food vendors, attracting thousands of visitors for each event.
They write:
“Conditions on Forsyth Plaza have grown to be too challenging to be able to host a large-scale community market event. The team has been navigating a plaza with broken lights, open drug usage, and no bathroom facilities (so human waste is often found on the plaza). It has become untenable to sustainably present this beloved community event.
For years, Think!Chinatown has advocated for upgrades on Forsyth Plaza, to allow for electricity usage for vendors and performances, public bathrooms, and running water that can serve not only community events like the Night Market, but also the long-standing affordable produce day market. Without these upgrades to Chinatown’s public plaza, the T!C team will no longer be able to continue events at this scale.”
