Lidl Set to Open Discount Grocery at 408 Grand St.

The German discount grocer, Lidl, will be opening a new location at 408 Grand St., in the space previously occupied by a Rite Aid store.

Lidl and Grand Street Guild, the nonprofit housing operator which controls the 23,000 square foot commercial space, made the announcement in the past week. Workers have recently been seen clearing out the interior of 408 Grand, which has been dormant since Rite Aid closed down its Lower East Side location in 2022.

Lidl operates more than 12,000 stores across Europe. Lidl U.S., with about 170 locations on the East Coast, is working to expand its American footprint. In New York, the company has opened groceries in Harlem, Astoria, Elmhurst, Fresh Meadows, East Bockaways and on Staten Island.

The Lower East Side store is expected to open in the summer of 2025.
