On Sunday, City Council member Margaret Chin celebrated her inauguration in Chinatown, signaling the beginning of her second term representing District 1, which includes the Lower East Side.  She continues to make the rounds next Monday, January 13th, appearing at a public gathering at the Seward Park Cooperative.  The event is being hosted by several Seward Park residents, including Dominic Berg,  Karen Blatt, Linda Jones, Brett Leitner, Michael Tumminia, Julie Ulmet & Jodi Zagoory.  It’s both a celebratory event and a chance to ask the Counil member about her priorities for the next four years.  The gathering takes place in the community room at 266 East Broadway, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  You can RSVP here:   SPCMeetup@gmail.com.

Incidentally, it’s a big day for the Council.  This afternoon, Melissa Mark-Viverito is widely expected to be chosen as the next Speaker.  As you can see, Mark-Viverito was on hand this past weekend to congratulate Chin, who’s an important ally in her bid for the speakership.  Yesterday, Capital New York speculated that Chin could be rewarded with the chairmanship of the education committee.   Council member Chin’s staff has declined to speak about committee assignments.  In her first term, Chin was chair of the Committee on Lower Manhattan Redevelopment and served on the Education, Small Business, Civil Rights, Women’s Issues, Aging, and Public Housing committees.
