Good Morning!

The first half of today will look a lot like yesterday, with light rain and mist. But the forecast brightens as the day progresses, with some afternoon sunshine. Bundle up, though: the highs are just crossing 40 degrees, and tonight the mercury will sink to the mid-30s.

Street Watch: Renovations at 140 and 168 Orchard St.

For lease: The southeast corner of Orchard and Rivington streets.

Renovations are changing the face of Orchard Street at two prominent corner locations this fall.

At 140-142 Orchard, which is also known as 85 Rivington St., a new modern facade has replaced former discount retail stores over the last few weeks. New glass doors face the corner and both cross streets. The renovations follow the building changing hands in October 2010. An LLC called Orchard Holdings paid $3.4 million for the walk-up apartment building, according to city real estate records.

Paperwork filed with the Department of Buildings over the last few months indicate a gut renovation of the cellar and ground floors, with demolition of existing partitions, all new plumbing and other structural and cosmetic work. Online real estate listings (with photos apparently taken pre-renovation) show one retail space of 440 square feet for rent at $5,800/month, while a smaller, of 200 square feet, is listed at $3,200/month.

Katz’s Will Now Send a Salami Sandwich Right to Your Door

Katz's: Feeding locals, celebrities and tourists since 1888.

When Hurricane Irene dropped by this summer, The Lo-Down team set out early to cover the neighborhood, bringing readers the news of the storm’s local impacts. That was some hunger-inducing work, so midday, we were delighted to find the lights on and the meat-slicing gurus at the ready inside Katz’s Delicatessen. One of the staffers actually scoffed at our wondering aloud whether they were closed due to weather.

After 123 years, a little wind and rain don’t threaten your business practices. Still, it’s good to shake things up every century or so. This week, the Lower East Side institution sent us the exciting news that they are now delivering their monster pastrami sandwiches, homemade matzo ball soup and other menu items locally. Thanksgiving Approaches: Feed Yourself and Help Others Eat

Knishes from Knishery NYC.

America’s annual celebration of gastronomic indulgences is quickly approaching. If your holiday traditions don’t tend toward the homemade, our neighborhood has lots of treats to offer. Here are a few that have crossed our inbox (see individual website links for details). We’d love to hear some others; send them to us at tips@thelodownny.com and we’ll be happy to share them.

  • Knishery NYC is baking special pumpkin knishes available for pre-order until Nov. 18. They are savory and spicy, but not sweet, and available for pickup or delivery.
  • Clinton Street Baking Co. is selling some holiday meal trimmings to go. Pre-order a pie (pumpkin, maple bourbon pecan and organic apple crumb), biscuits and cornbread by Nov. 22 for pickup at the restaurant.

Also, Thanksgiving is a great time to pitch in to help those less fortunate. The Bowery Mission will get a boost from Ellabess, in the Nolitan Hotel, which is collecting food and supplies for the mission’s Thanksgiving celebration from now through Nov. 20. They are seeking canned and frozen veggies, turkeys and pies, as well as personal items such as toiletries and outerwear (new items only). Drop off is from 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.; donors receive a voucher for a complimentary snack at the restaurant.

JP’s Food Adventures: Where to Eat a Cubano

The Cuban sandwich has been a neighborhood staple for decades. While Cuban expats in Florida take credit for its creation, Puerto Rican and Dominican diners and luncheonettes have been the bastions of this delicacy here. Variations have even made it to upscale menus, commanding a price of $14 or more. Fortunately great examples can still be found for $5. Continue reading JP’s Food Adventures: Where to Eat a Cubano

Around 300 Lady Gaga Books Sold at New Museum

Lo-Down reader K Webster snapped this photo early today high above the New Museum, where fans camped out on the sidewalk for a chance to attend a book event next Tuesday night featuring Lady Gaga and celebrity photographer Terry Richardson.  In order to score a ticket, you had to buy a copy of “Lady Gaga X Terry Richardson” ($54).

We hear about 300 copies were snapped up shortly after the museum opened at 10 a.m.  There’s no doubt they could have sold a lot more but Lady Gaga’s people wanted to make sure everyone who bought a book gets a chance to meet her.  Gaga and Richardson were excited to hold the event in the neighborhood due to their Lower East Side ties and the New Museum Bookstore was happy to oblige.

Did you score a ticket today? If so, we’d love to hear from you. You can contact us at tips@thelodownny.com.

Hybrid Stores Take Hold on Lower East Side and Beyond

Lost Weekend, on lower Orchard Street. Photo by Wyatt Marshall.

Editor’s note: The Lower East Side has been a bastion of entrepreneurship for many decades. In the last couple of years, one trend being seen here and elsewhere is the establishment of “hybrid stores.” Reporter Wyatt Marshall talks with some of the business owners experimenting with this growing retail phenomenon:

The next time you find yourself browsing the racks for board shorts and need a little pick-me-up, why not grab that latte at the same store?

You can do just that at Lost Weekend on Orchard Street and fulfill a number of other one-stop shopping missions in the neighborhood. On streets that were once lined with mom-and-pops that have long since shuttered their windows, hybrid stores are thriving. Continue reading Hybrid Stores Take Hold on Lower East Side and Beyond

Lady Gaga Frenzy About to Ensue at New Museum

We just returned from the New Museum, where fans of Lady Gaga camped out through the night for a chance to attend a book event featuring the ubiquitous pop star and celebrity photographer Terry Richardson next Tuesday.  The line began forming yesterday afternoon and now snakes around Stanton Street all the way to Chrystie. Bleary-eyed Gaga devotees seem to be in good spirits. But they’ve got awhile to wait. Nu-Mu’s doors don’t open until 10 a.m. In order to attend next week’s event, you’ve got to buy “Lady Gaga X Terry Richardson,” the $50 coffee table book..  We first brought you news of the upcoming Gaga-frenzy Friday afternoon.
