A student led bike tour, sponsored by Local Spokes, in August.
During the summer we told you about Local Spokes, a Lower East Side and Chinatown bicycling coalition. In the next few weeks, the group is planning several “visioning sessions” to better understand how people, especially those in diverse communities, see bicycling in New York City. This weekly feature spotlights a wide variety of people who live and work on the Lower East Side. If you know someone you would like to suggest be featured in “My LES,” please email us here.
What do you do?
We operate a creative studio and night gallery.
During the day we help companies create stories and tell them through film, photography and design. At night we run a night gallery called JS55, where we showcase works exploring the relationship between art, design and technology in the context of everyday life.
Doug is a designer, reformed secret party thrower, non-profit board vice-president at the Art Directors Club and a professor at SVA. Kristin is a former New York City Ballet dancer, founder of thewinger.com and a film director/producer.

Today we’re excited to announce a new partnership with the ZipCard, which offers all kinds of deals and special events — specifically for locals — on the Lower East Side.
Deal programs are, of course, all the rage these days. But what we like about the ZipCard is that it’s just for people who live in the 10002 zip code and the program rewards loyalty to neighborhood businesses.
The latest participant is the brand new Heritage Meat Shop in the Essex Street Market. Alias, 2nd Floor on Clinton, Barramundi, Elizabeth Ryan Floral, Kaia House, K.E. Haas Salon, Mastihashop, Roni-Sue Chocolates, September Wines, Szeki Accessories and Yoga High are also part of the program.
It’s free to join the ZipCard Program. Just head on over to their web site to sign up.
We’re particularly pleased about our association with the ZipCard because recently we also joined the Authentically Local program, a national campaign to support local, independent businesses.

From time to time, we like to check in on the terminally stalled East River Park reconstruction project. Recently, the Pile Foundation barge that had been anchored in the river, just south of the Williamsburg Bridge, disappeared. Continue reading Still Little Progress to Report From East River Park
MOODY Products (Titles from L-R: Moody Cola, America Runs of Graff, Absolute Graff, AA Games) October-December 2011
There’s a new work on the facade of 132 Eldridge Street, the Woodward Gallery’s rotating street art exhibition space. Moody presents “Products,” an extension of the artist’s exploration of our “visual culture.” You can read more about the project here.
There’s more news from the Woodward Gallery. On November 5th, Lady Pink. “the first woman of graffiti,” will open a major exhibition inside the main gallery space. The artist, who began painting subway trains in 1979, is now featured in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum. Lady Pink will be present for the opening reception.
One other note. Kristine and John Woodward told us recently they are moving forward with plans to open up a cafe inside 132 Eldridge. Another Eldridge Street spot, Panade, was operating out of the space briefly, but a partnership with the gallery fizzled. Last month, Community Board 3 decided not to support the gallery’s liquor license application. But they are undeterred. We’ll keep you posted.

One of the East Village’s most photogenic events took place yesterday afternoon, as the organizers of Tompkins Square dog run put on their 21st annual canine costume contest.
There were people dressed up as dogs and dogs dressed up as people, along with several MTA and tour bus costumes and more than one canine bee. Continue reading Dogs on Parade at Tompkins Square Park

The Grub Street Food Festival is in full swing this afternoon along Essex Street between Hester and Grand.
Come hungry if you are headed to the Grub Street Food Festival at the Hester Street Fair this afternoon: there’s plenty to eat! It’s a smorgasbord of tasty samples of grilled meat, cold sweets, hot spices and gourmet fixin’s. Food and drink vendors have spread out across the high school track next to HSF’s usual spot adjacent to Seward Park. The beer garden, a few food vendors and lots of non-food merchandise booths are happening in the regular space. Admission is free and the fair runs until 6 p.m.

Landing in our in-box today: word from the East Village Community Coalition that their 5th annual “Get Local” guide is now available.
The guide highlights the independent shops and restaurants that make the neighborhood unique.
The organization notes that frequenting the 400 or so businesses listed in the guide helps sustain them — and keeps your money in the community.
The guide is available in shops and cafes throughout the neighborhood. You can view an online version here.
The dining room features tile floors, large windows along Rivington and chandeliers fashioned from retired cutlery.
Most of the plywood is down and the lace curtains are up at Sauce, the new Italian eatery set to open by the end of the month at the corner of Rivington and Allen streets.
For his first foray south of Houston Street, Frank Prizinzano of Frank and Lil’ Frankie’s has converted the former Kampuchea space into an old-school red sauce look. We wandered by with our camera this afternoon and caught construction workers putting finishing touches on ceilings and bathrooms. There’s still some work to be done on the Rivington Street side, but the entrance on Allen Street is complete, and big windows offer a look inside.

Is it a miracle or a mirage? There have been so many conflicting visions for stalled construction site 180 Ludlow over the years, that any news about this troubled project is at least a little bit suspect. But the latest development seems believable: Curbed reports today that Serge Hoyda has finally sold the property to a highly regarded boutique hotel operator for $25 million.
According to the blog post, BD Hotels has apparently taken over at 180 Ludlow. This morning an EV Grieve reader noted that there seemed to be increased nighttime activity inside the hulking shell sandwiched between “The Ludlow” apartment building and Max Fish. BD Hotels operates the Maritime, Chambers, Greenwich, Jane and Bowery hotels. The sale had been rumored for many months, but it was held up by a lawsuit between Hoyda and the previous owner of the building site.
The headline in the Observer this afternoon reads, “Lower East Side finally getting a half decent boutique hotel.”
