This Week’s Kids Pick

February 14 is the first day for Chinatown YMCA members to register their little ones for swim lessons and other youth classes (non-member registration begins Feb. 21). Swim lessons are offered for children ages  6 months to 12 years;  other youth classes, which include baketball and martial arts, are offered for ages 2 to 15.  For more information about this and other activitites for kids, check out our Kids page.

Good Morning!

Have we seen the  last of winter? It’s nice to hope. A short-lived snow squall blew over the crew from ZogSports playing football in East River Park Saturday, but today’s forecast calls for a breezy, mostly sunny day with a high of 50 degrees. Community Board 3′s State Liquor Authority committee meets tonight, as does the Chinatown Working Group. For details, check out our calendar. And if all you sweethearts out there need last-minute guidance for Valentine’s Day dinner plans, our Food page can help.

A free Qi-gong and yoga class at the Living Theatre

There is a special qi gong (pronounced Chi Gong) yoga class being offered at the Living Theatre right now on Friday evenings at 5pm, through the month of February. The instructor is artist and performer Kennedy Yanko. She has studied and continues to work privately with her sifu (which means teacher in Chinese) since she was 15. She is also a member and performer at the Living Theatre.  She incorporates yoga and qi gong for the practice of the class.  Her teacher bio is here. CB3 Committee Reviews Intercity Bus Permit Bill

Last week, a bill was introduced in Albany that, if enacted, would create a permit system for intercity buses operating in New York City.  The legislation, sponsored by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senator Daniel Squadron, seeks to reign in those Chinatown buses roaming the neighborhood and causing serious congestion, pollution and other “quality of life” problems.

Earlier this week, Silver and Squadron aides briefed Community Board 3′s transportation committee on the proposal. As we reported last week, the bill would authorize the New York City Council to pass a local law setting up a permit process and establishing regulations for interstate bus companies. Follow-up: Friday Night Throwdown Inspires a Movie

Rockstar Charlie - photo by Edel Kelly, courtesy of modelboxers.com

Yesterday we linked to the New York Times’ feature on “Friday Night Throwdown,” the uber-hip underground boxing event frequently held in LES warehouse spaces. Later in the day, I spoke with filmmaker Michelle Groskopf, who’s making a documentary about Throwdown’s biggest star.

Several years ago, Michelle recognized the up-and-comer, sometimes referred to as “Rockstar Charlie,” was someone to watch. He’s now an undefeated boxer, aiming for the super middleweight title of the Golden Gloves (and an aspiring model about to land a contract with a major agency). Charlie has been training seriously for a few years now and is being coached by Brooklyn trainer Leon Taylor, (“the greatest fighter never known”).

More on Union Market’s LES Expansion Plans

Brooklyn grocer Union Market will open at 240 E. Houston this fall.

Editor’s note: On Friday EV Grieve reported the big news that an upscale Brooklyn market was taking over the ground floor of 240 East Houston, at Essex Street. Our Jennifer Strom went over to Cobble Hill to learn more about the owners’ Lower East Side plans:

Union Market, a small chain of neighborhood grocery stores specializing in local, organic and natural foods, plans to open its first Manhattan store at the corner of Houston and Essex streets this fall.

With stores in Park Slope and Cobble Hill, Union Market’s founders decided to take the big leap across the East River for two reasons, says partner Marko Lalic. They have personal ties to the neighborhood: Co-founder Martin Nunez grew up on the Lower East Side and the third co-founder, Paul Fernandez, is a partner in two prominent local restaurants, Macondo at Allen and Houston, and Rayuela at Allen and Stanton.

Secondly, they see the Lower East Side as having a community ambiance comparable to the Brooklyn neighborhoods where their first three stores have succeeded.

“This particular location is the stomping grounds of two of my partners,” Lalic said in an interview yesterday. “And there’s a very similar feel between here and there.” Continue reading More on Union Market’s LES Expansion Plans

Weekend Music Picks

Here are musician Ken Beasley’s top music picks on the Lower East Side this weekend:

Ursa Minor

URSA MINOR – Fri., Feb. 11 | 8PM at The Living Room

Ursa Minor has been grinding out winning New York rock songs & shows for over 5 years now, and although they were already great when they started, they have since moved beyond being really good writers with really strong musical chops, and are now a fully realized, fantastic rock band. The level of comfort they have while playing together gives an overall free and organic feeling to the material. Continue reading Weekend Music Picks

Irish Pub Owners Set Sights on 10 Delancey Street

Coming up Monday, it’s the Valentine’s Day Massacre, otherwise known as Community Board 3′s SLA Committee meeting.  How romantic!

Here’s one application that’s bound to attract some attention from the committee. Agenda item #19 — a request from brothers Martin and Mark Whelan for a full bar at 10-12 Delancey Street, the tenement next to the Bowery Ballroom.  These guys are best known for Irish pubs like Stout NYC (the “Superdome of taverns”) in Herald Square, St. Andews and Maggie’s Place.

They want to call their Lower East Side bar One Mile House (sound familiar, Bowery history buffs?). There would be 17 tables, a 20 seat bar and a backyard patio.  On their application, the food is described as “comfort/gastropub” fare. The bar would be open from noon-4am daily.

CB3′s SLA Committee meeting takes place Monday at 630pm, at the JASA/Green Houses, 200 East 5th Street.

Pedestrian Danger Zones, Marble Cemetery Hole, Asian/Italian Karaoke

  • A new study finds (surprise, surprise) the Bowery is dangerous for pedestrians (NYT).
  • Hating San Gennaro — nothing new under the sun (Jeremiah).
  • The Strokes release their first single in five years (Observer).
  • Weekend gig: dj’ing at Asia Roma, Mulberry Street’s Italian/Asian/Karaoke restaurant (Open City).

Good Morning!

LES Film Festival Kicks Off Twenty Days of Films

The LES Film Festival Creative Team: Damon Cardasis, Shannon Walker, Roxy Hunt and Tony Castle, celebrating after opening night

The LES Film Festival kicked off 20 days of shorts and features made for under $30,000 last night at the intimate Grand Opening space on Norfolk Street.  If the evening’s lineup was any indication, audiences will be in for a treat during the next couple weeks at the festival; their selection of films is quite enchanting.  Continue reading LES Film Festival Kicks Off Twenty Days of Films
