A short time ago, we returned from Pier 42 (at the end of Montgomery Street), where U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer called on the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. (LMDC) to pay for the construction of an East Side waterfront park and recreational area.
The city has plans to turn the pier into an urban beach and boat launch, but has no money to complete the project. Schumer, appearing with community leaders, urged the LMDC to use federal funds awarded after 9/11 for the pier. We’ll have a more detailed report later.
Incidentally, today’s news conference was co-organized by Schumer and State Senator Daniel Squadron, who represents Lower Manhattan and the Lower East Side. Schumer made a point of praising Squadron, a former aide who helped write “Positively American,” Schumer’s best-selling book. And he congratulated Squadron and his wife, Liz Weinstein, who have their first baby on the way.
