Director Tim Burton’s debut feature, Peewee’s Big Adventure is the Midnight Movie at the Sunshine Cinema. It will play at midnight July 2nd, 3rd and 4th this weekend. All tickets $9.99 // 143 E. Houston Street.
The Hot! Festival at Dixon Place is in full swing. Be sure to catch downtown performance diva Dynasty Handbag (alter ego of performance artist Jibz Cameron) in her first full length piece, Vertititgo. Created with the help of the Wooster Group’s Kate Valk, she’s “on the hunt for a missing woman—or is it every woman? …Or could she be the very woman she is looking for?” $10 advance, $15 at the door // Friday, July 2 and Saturday, July 3 // 7:30p // 161 Chrystie Street.

It’s your last weekend to catch Off-off Broadway troupe Nylon Fusion‘s staging of Lope de Vega’s rarely produced 17th-century play, Fuente Ovejuna at Clemente Soto Velez. Directed by Andy Goldberg, the piece is based on an actual historical incident that took place in the village of Fuente Obejuna in Catile, Spain in 1476. If you aren’t headed out to Coney Island to catch Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest on Sunday, you might want to head “downtown” to Battery Park for Dan Zanes’ Jam & Jubilee – The Battery 4th of July Concert and Family Festival presented by the 2010 River 2 River Festival.
Special guests include Tony nominee Stew of Passing Strange, spoken word poet Caridad De La Luz aka La Bruja and Joan Osborn. Spend the day dancing to the infectious rhythms of La Cumbiamba eNeYe, marching with the parade of 76 Trombones and singing along to Dan’s own brand of Broadway classics. Bring a blanket and enjoy the lawn along with jugglers, stilt walkers, and a cast of larger than life characters.
