From State Senator Daniel Squadron’s office:
New York State Senator Daniel Squadron, Congress Member Jerrold Nadler, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, Assembly Member Deborah Glick, and Councilmember Margaret Chin will co-host a tenants rights forum on Thursday, bringing together housing advocates, legal experts, and community members for a discussion of how recent court decisions regarding buildings that received the J-51 or 421-g tax benefits could impact residents throughout Lower Manhattan. The panel members will discuss the recent Roberts vs. Tishman Speyer and W. Associates, LLC vs. Maverick Scott decisions and what they mean for Lower Manhattan and New York City as a whole. Elected officials will also discuss the status of housing legislation in the city and state. The panel discussion will be followed by a question-answer period during which legal experts will be available for individual consultations.

Here’s something for all of you car-deprived New Yorkers. Hertz is taking on Zip Car in the “car sharing” business – and there’s a new location on the Lower East Side. In an apparent first for a Manhattan co-op, Connect by Hertz, has made a deal with the Seward Park Co-op. on Grand Street. If you walk past the cooperative’s office on Clinton Street, you’ll notice two cars — a Prius and a Smart Car. They’re available for rental by anyone, not just Seward Park residents. There are hourly, daily and weekly rates.

 SLA Chair Dennis Rosen
State Senator Daniel Squadron, along with just about every other elected official downtown, is organizing a “Nightlife Town Hall” next Thursday night, February 4th, at P.S. 20. Dennis Rosen, the relatively new chair of the embattled State Liquor Authority is expected to attend, along with SLA CEO Trina Meade and NYPD officials.
Back in October, Squadron set up a smaller meeting with elected officials and community board members to meet Rosen and discuss some of their top concerns. At a hearing in Albany this week, Rosen pledged to clear the SLA’s liquor license backlog by October of this year. During the session on the Lower East Side last fall, he got an earful from participants about the SLA’s antiquated way of doing business and its unresponsiveness to community concerns.

Yesterday, we posted a notice about the monthly District 1 Community Education Council Meeting scheduled tonight at P.S. 142. It should be noted that an hour before the CEC meeting there will be a state-mandated hearing seeking public feedback on Manhattan Charter School’s charter renewal. There’s a bit of a back story here that’s worth recounting.
The District 1 Education Council had originally planned its regular meeting at another location. They expressed dismay that the public hearing had been scheduled at the same time, in their words, “depriving them (and parents in the district) of the opportunity” to take part in the renewal process — in “flagrant disregard” for state law. When the Department of Education declined to change the time of the hearing, CEC 1 moved its meeting to P.S. 142, so anyone interested in attending both events would be accommodated.

The intriguing monthly series, “How I Learned,” is back at Happy Ending this evening. Hostess Blaise Allysen Kearsley’s witty preview:
This month I am so pleased to present an obsession-inspired lineup that might make your head explode in a best-ever kind of way. We have THREE Moth superstars, a composer/writer/former go-go boy and an inaugural How I Learned alum signifying our one year anniversary. I don’t know about you, but I have changed so much in the last year. I now wear long underwear in the wintertime. I also have a new haircut (it’s too short and totally not what I asked for, but whatever–it’s all about the transformation). Rumor has it stories this month may or may not include a frenzied trip from Atlanta to Hong Kong, getting locked out of the house with a baby and a vibrator, and, let’s just say, living your best life. (What’s up, Oprah.)

There were several interesting tidbits from last night’s Community Board 3 meeting. Later today we’ll have a detailed report on the debate over the “Houston Dee,” the luxury rental building planned for Houston Street and Avenue D. Here’s what else happened:
- Margaret Chin made her first appearance at CB3 since becoming Lower Manhattan’s City Councilmember earlier this month. In her report to the board, Chin said she recently toured the World Trade Center site and got a fascinating look at the new subterranean transportation hub. She also said Patricia Olan, who worked for former Councilmember Alan Gerson, has joined her office as a community liaison.
- Several residents came to support the pizza restaurant 11B, in its quest for a liquor license. The restaurant also presented the board with a letter of support from City Councilmember Rosie Mendez. But nonetheless CB3 decided to stick with the SLA Committee’s recommendation to deny the request.
- District Manager Susan Stetzer reported that the Manhattan Bridge reconstruction project will begin in March. The city will brief CB3′s transportation Committee next month.
- CB3 Chair Dominic Pisciotta said he would be attending a meeting Friday with other community board members, elected officials and the NYPD to address concerns about the downtown terror trials.

According to the Daily News, Sheldon Silver disagrees with the notion that Andrew Cuomo should declare for governor sooner rather than later. And, responding to reports that his relationship with Governor Paterson has almost completely deteriorated, he says:
“…I think I call it is like it is. I speak to the governor. I think he’s my friend. He’s been my friend for 20 years. He doesn’t agree with everything the Assembly does. He’s not shy about saying it. I’m not shy about saying I think he made a mistake here.” When asked if he respects Paterson, Silver replied: “Absolutely.” …“He’s the governor of the state of New York,” the speaker added. “He has to be worked with. I think long after I’m the Assembly speaker and he’s the governor we’ll continue to be friends.”

Nathan Skiles from Indiana has a solo show, “Black Forest/White Lightning” opening tonight at Sloan Fine Art, (128 Rivington) from 6-8PM in conjunction with Greene Contemporary. According to the press release, the show is a “collection of densely adorned cuckoo clocks” made in part from foam rubber, and other materials like dreamcatchers and Rubik’s cubes. The clocks “lend themselves easily to observations on the convenient cliches and ‘rules’ of time and space.” You can read an in-depth interview with Skiles and see more of his work at Hi-Fructose.

 CB1's Julie Menin

Community Board 1 reconvened last night to grapple with its resolution urging federal officials to consider moving the 9/11 terror trial from the federal courthouse at 500 Pearl Street.
The executive committee’s resolution, passed last Wednesday, suggested Governors Island as an alternative, and was revised to include three additional sites. The Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburg, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the Federal jail complex at FCI Otisville were offered as alternatives. The motion, and an amendment including the alternative locations, was unanimously supported by the full board last night.
