The Seward Park Co-op is in search of a company or organization interested in operating a greenmarket, or possibly an artisans market, on property it owns bordering the city-operated Seward Park. The tree-lined lot, located between Seward Park and the basketball courts on Essex Street, has gone unused for decades. The Co-op, which also owns a sizable amount of commercial property on Grand and Clinton Streets, believes a weekend market could help create “more buzz” below Delancey Street.
Co-op board member Pietro Filardo, who drew the rendering above, noted that the location is appealing for two reasons. First, the lot is embedded in the park, already a major focal point for the community. Second, at the foot of Hester Street, it could serve as a natural destination for people walking from restaurants and galleries west of Essex Street. It’s also a connecting street between Sara D. Roosevelt Park and Seward Park.

The Co-op has had some preliminary conversations with organizations that might be willing to operate a food or “flea” market on the property, Saturdays and Sundays. They are in the process of repaving the lot and making other improvements. Co-op President Michael Tumminia said the board is interested in increasing foot traffic in the area, as part of a larger plan to make shopping and dining below Delancey more appealing. But he also indicated a desire to help develop a greater sense of community, both for Co-op residents and its neighbors.

Police are still searching for two suspects in the shootings that rattled Avenue A early Sunday morning. An off-duty bouncer, 42-year old Eric "Taz" Pagan, was shot and killed outside the club, "Forbidden City." Two others were also shot, and are being treated at Bellevue Hospital. According to the New York Times, the suspects escaped in a white Nissan minivan. Pagan was apparently trying to break up a fight that began after the minivan grazed several people on the sidewalk. Pagan lived on the Lower East Side most of his life. He had a teenage daughter and step-son. It's the second time in as many weekends that shots rang out in the neighborhood. Last weekend, a man was shot outside a bodega on Avenue C. The Times, the Daily News and the Post covered the story.

Two bizarre crimes from the New York Post's blotter:
Three thieves surrounded a 29-year-old man on East 12th Street near Second Avenue at 4:45 a.m. Saturday, police said. One of the robbers demanded the man's shoes, but he refused to give
them up, cops said. So one thief punched him in the stomach and head,
and swiped an unspecified amount of cash from him. The suspects, identified as Glenn Williams, 24, Jumar Devouil, 28,
and Melissa Bishop, 29, were quickly rounded up and charged with
robbery. The victim suffered minor injuries.
It was a close shave for a 63-year-old woman attacked by a deranged
man on the Lower East Side, police sources said yesterday. The woman was walking with friends on the Bowery near Bleecker
Street at 2:24 p.m. Thursday when Donald Scawright, 47, assaulted her
with a can of shaving cream, sources said. For unknown reasons, Scawright then allegedly swung a backpack
containing, among other things, the shaving-cream can, hitting the
woman in the head, face and neck. When a police officer on patrol got involved, Scawright allegedly
punched him in the head and back before being arrested on assault
charges. The woman and police officer suffered minor injuries.
