New Mural at Verlaine Highlights Nelson Mandela’s Message of Love

The national and international news headlines this summer have been pretty grim. The Michael Brown shooting in Missouri, the Staten Island police brutality controversy and the war in Gaza are just some of the events weighing heavily on many people. Gary Weingarten, co-owner of Lower East Side bar Verlaine, decided to make a statement about what’s happening on the roll-down great outside his 13-year old Rivington Street establishment.

City inspectors shut down Verlaine on Wednesday night.

A visit from the city’s health inspectors Wednesday night shut down Verlaine, a busy Lower East Side nightspot that serves Asian tapas and high-end cocktails with a splash of DJ music, poetry readings and art exhibits.


The bar next to “Fat Baby” is a sleek, dimly lit hideaway offering Vietnamese-inspired appetizers.The space is available for parties and other special events. Happy hour features their signature “lychee martinis” for $5 every night until 10pm.
