In the news this past week:

–The Paul Taylor Dance Company will move its headquarters from the Lower East Side, establishing a new presence in Midtown. But the dance company plans to keep its space on the far eastern end of Grand Street for performances and community programs. [The New York Times]

–There’s apparently a plan to save Ian Schrager’s Public Hotel from foreclosure, but some investors are balking. [The Real Deal]

–The Museum of Chinese in America has bought the building in which it is housed for $51 million. [Crain’s]

–More on the battle between Bluestockings Bookstore and neighbors on Suffolk Street over the distribution of Narcan and access to a basement bathroom by people facing homelessness. It’s, “the culmination of a year in which the bookstore has been caught in the crossfire of competing visions of neighborhood and community.” [The Guardian]

–As we’ve noted, a self-filtering pool in the East River has taken a big step towards becoming a reality. But the original concept has changed a lot. Co-founder Don Ping-Wong released a statement, saying: ‘When + POOL secured its site in Chinatown in 2019, a neighborhood that is the home to my studio and where I am a proud and committed member of the community, it did so in the service of luxury housing. The de Blasio administration had been caught exploiting loopholes to waive through a series of new tower developments that the community deeply opposed. The mayor’s office was clear that they granted us the site because they needed a win.” [designboom]

–Fidel Caballero, an alum of Contra, has opened Corima on Allen Street, which is focused on the cuisine of northern Mexico. “With the restaurant split between two menus — a la carte in the front, a tasting menu in the back — the output is ambitious…” [Eater]

–Casa Mezcal, a mainstay on Orchard Street for the past 15 years, is closing at the end of the month. [Instagram]

–Que Chevere, the Puerto Rican food stall, is the latest merchant to exit the Market Line at Essex Crossing. [Instagram]

–From pop-up to brick-and-mortar, Gotham Burger Social Club opens on Essex Street. [Eater]

–Founder Lou Holtzman has sold Eastside Sound, the Forsyth Street recording studio, after 50 years — but the legacy of the Lower East Side business lives on with a new owner, musician Andrés Pollak. [NY1]
