In the news this past week:

–Permits have been filed to expand the old Eisner Brothers property on the corner of Essex and Broome streets, creating a 16-story mixed residential and commercial building. The 1890 structure was once known as the Good Samaritan/Eastern District Dispensary building. [New York Yimby]

–The historic bank building at 54-58 Bowery in Chinatown, a city landmark, has hit the market. [Bayard Bugle]

–A $5 million renovation of the East Broadway Mall under the Manhattan Bridge by its new operator may ultimately be good for Chinatown but existing small business owners are worried about their fate. [Gothamist]

–Remembering a son of Chinatown, Private Danny Chen, who died by suicide 12 years ago after being subjected to emotional abuse by other soldiers while stationed in Afghanistan. [The New York Times]

–Artist Lucy Sparrow has created “Feltz Bagels,” using, “approximately 30,000 pieces of felt to recreate the look and feel of the authentic Jewish bagel shops prominent in New York’s Lower East Side neighborhood.” [AM New York]

–A ceremony marked the co-naming of a portion of East 4th Street in the memory of the legendary Lower East Side community activist Frances Goldin. [EV Grieve]
