Lower East Side Arts & Events Weekly Roundup

Must Read

Here are some suggestions for upcoming events that are on our radar:

  • Essex Market brings back its “Talk & Taste” series with an evening with Vanessa Mota and Annette Tomei on Wednesday, September 20th at 6:30pm. The night includes a cooking demo and a book signing of Vanessa’s newly released “The Dominican Kitchen.”
  • Also Wednesday, Sept. 20th, HORT/CULTURE hosts their penultimate event of their 2023 series with Chicagolands’s premier DIY-ecologist, Joey Santore, p.k.a Crime_Pays_but_Botany_Doesn’t. For the uninitiated, Santore is returning to the Lower East Side from the scrubland of West Texas for an evening of tales from his recent expeditions around the globe.
  • It’s National Hispanic Heritage Month and in honor of El Grito de Lares: Commemorating a Legacy of Resistance, a series of commemorative events will be traveling through the neighborhood on Saturday, September 23, 2023, dedicated to raising awareness of El Grito and the legacies of resistance in Puerto Rico and diaspora, 155 years after the uprising began. Participating organizations include Caborca, Abrons Arts Center, Loisaida Center, La Sala de Pepe, The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural & Educational Center. That night, The Clemente hosts “Grita,” a party with a performance by Angélica Negrón starting at 8:30pm, followed by a curated playlist by DJ Payola from RadioRed, Puerto Rico.
  • Joe’s Pub celebrates its 25th birthday celebration (photo above) with a free, public event on Astor Place, featuring Fogo Azul, Jina Brass Band, and Slavic Soul Party on Saturday, September 23 from 3pm – 6pm.
