Here are a few suggestions for local happenings that are on our radar:

  • Support the Off-Off Broadway Theater community at Indie Theater Week, which kicks off on Monday, June 25 and includes the New York Independent Theater Honorary Awards, an Indie Theater Convocation and Open House at the 14Y Theater on June 27th, IndieSpace’s One Year Anniversary Celebration at CultureLab LIC on June 28th, and an Indie Theater Community Pool Party at the 14th Street Y on July 1.
  • Celebrate 20 years of the beloved alternative art space, Participant, at their Benefit Performance at Legendary SOBs, with an evening of Artist-Choice Performances, Monday, June 26, from 7:30–9:30pm, hosted by Narcissister and CHRISTEENE. Participant recently relocated from East Houston to 116 Elizabeth Street to begin a multi-year project aimed at “envisioning a sustainable future in support of the transformative cultural work by and for the artists and communities of Downtown New York City.”
  • Slip on your dancing shoes for the Pedrito Martinez Group at Drom on Thursday, June 29 at 7:00pm. Pedrito is widely regarded as the world’s leading percussionist in Afro Cuban music and with his quintet, he presents a high energy blend of Cuban timba, traditional rumba, and the sacred sounds of Yoruba in which Pedrito is a Babalawo.
  • Indulge in a collection of modern film noir selections from around the world at the Metrograph. Their “Neon Noir” series begins June 30 and features classics like Wong Kar-wai’s Fallen Angels and Blade Runner: The Final Cut, along with Inherent Vice, The Matrix, Mulholland Drive and more, all shown on glorious 35mm prints.
  • Close out Pride month at The Clemente with a dance class and live show on Friday, June 30, with Las Mariquitas, a New York based Queer and Trans-centered salsa band and collective. Doors open at 6pm followed by a salsa class at 7pm with the concert starting at 8pm.
