“Downtown 2021,” a new show curated by Sam Gordon at La MaMa Galleria opens tomorrow. A collection of work by local artists who have been included in current or previous exhibitions from a selection of over 25 galleries, including local hotspot (now on hiatus) Beverly’s, will be featured. An accompanying essay will highlight the artists and spaces in the exhibitions as well as another 24 spaces “from the recent past that have closed or on hiatus.”
The show takes its name from the film, Downtown 81, which portrayed a day in New York City in 1981, in all its glory. Downtown 21 hopes to act as a sequel of sorts, “taking inspiration from downtown as an idea, a state of mind, and a generative space – rather than just a geographic location.
La MaMa Galleria (47 Great Jones St.) is open to the public Fridays and Saturdays from 12p – 6pm and by appointment.
