Must Read

The team behind “Curtain Up,” a new documentary featuring elementary school students in the PS 124 Theater Club, is offering a community preview on December 15th at 3:00pm at 21 Pell St. in Chinatown. The film follows the young performers as they prepare for a production that will compete in the international Junior Theater Festival.

Co-director Kelly Ng writes:

I spent the past year covering education, immigration, identities and culture in and around this city; but the biggest project I’d embarked on over the last year is documenting the PS 124 Theater Club in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Our film follows these elementary school kids as they prepare for a production and begin to discover themselves. Behind the scenes, they face families’ expectations and uncertainties post-graduation. It’s a medley [of] identity, dreams, and growth, that also confronts certain stereotypes among Asian Americans – Asian American performers, particularly.
