Wu’s Wonton King Set to Reopen Tomorrow After Renovations (Updated)

Must Read

If you’ve been thinking of trudging over to Wu’s Wonton King in the stifling heat, give it another day. The popular Cantonese spot at 165 East Broadway is closed for the day. A sign on the roll down gate says the closure is due to renovations and that the restaurant will be reopening Wednesday.

We tried calling Wu’s, but there was no answer this afternoon. The last graded inspection of Wu’s by the Department of Health took place in January of this year. The restaurant got a “B” grade and 21 violation points. There was an ungraded inspection June 29, which resulted in 53 violation points. Items cited by the inspector included the presence of roaches and flies, food surfaces and utensils improperly sanitized and plumbing that was improperly installed.

Wu’s took over the space on the corner of East Broadway and Rutgers streets following the demise of the longtime Chinese restaurant Wing Shoon. That business had a long history of problems with the health department. There’s no sign Wu’s will be met wit the same fate. The owners gave the space a major overhaul before opening in 2016.

Wu’s Wonton King quickly became a neighborhood favorite and has won rave reviews.

UPDATE 7/19 The latest check of the Department of Health’s website shows Wu’s was ordered closed following a re-inspection on Monday. A Notice of Violation was issued. The restaurant was not open for lunch today, although employees said they expect to resume service this evening.
