Sammy Gluck wants to set the record straight.
Gluck, owner of Global International Men’s Clothiers, says the store is not closing. In response to an erroneous online story, the longtime operator of one the Lower East Side’s oldest shops tells us this afternoon that he remains open at 62 Orchard St. and will continue to be open for the foreseeable future.
Gluck’s father, Isaac, first opened the shop more than 60 years ago. Sammy is a well know figure in the community. If you have ever been anywhere near Orchard Street, between Grand and Broome streets, you have almost certainly encountered Sammy, the quintessential Lower East Side suit salesman.
There is a “store for rent sign” posted on the facade of 62 Orchard St. Gluck said he has asked Misrahi Realty to test the market, in the event that he decides to retire at some point in the future. But Gluck said, “We’re not closing. We’re here to serve our customers. We’re not going out of business.”
Jason Misrahi, who has the listing, told us that the asking rent for the first floor space (which Gluck owns) is $20,000. A second floor space, owned by another party, is also available.
