Happening in the neighborhood Feb. 14-20:

–Beginning Saturday night, the Metrograph Theater kicks off a series to get you in the mood for the Oscars. The programmers at the Ludlow Street independent theater have picked out their favorite “best picture winners.” The series debuts with Casa Blanca, before continuing with award-winning films such as The Hurt Locker, Midnight Cowboy, The Apartment, The Departed and Rebecca. –“If you’ve got a stringed instrument of any kind,” advises the New York Times, “let Brandon Ross play it: He’s sure to coax out some kind of unnameable beauty.” The guitarist is in residency this week at The Stone, John Zorn’s avant garde music club. He’ll be playing with special music guests each night. Feb. 14-19, 9 p.m., $20 per set, website.

–The young, up-and-coming R&B singer Brayton Bowman stages a “Rockwood Takeover” Thursday night with special guests. Feb. 16, 7 p.m., free with RSVP or $10 at the door, website.

–On Wednesday night, the Marc Straus Gallery will open a new exhibition of works by the neo-expressionist painter Sandro Chia. It’s the first solo show from the artist in New York in almost a decade. Opening reception, Feb. 15, 6-8 p.m., Mark Straus Gallery, 299 Grand St., Facebook invite.

–Ada Calhoun, author of St. Marks Is Dead: The Many Lives of America’s Hippest Street, will appear at Tompkins Square Library Thursday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. Calhoun, who grew up on the block, will read passages from her well-received book, take part in a Q&A and sign copies of the book. –Have you caught comedian/podcaster Catie Lazarus’s regular show, Employee of the Month, at Joe’s Pub? It’s always fun and interesting. The next edition features guests Alan Alda and playwright Sarah Jones. Thursday, Feb. 16, Joe’s Pub, 7 p.m., $30, website.
