Businesses at 95 Delancey Street remain closed today as a sidewalk shed – scaffolding designed to protect pedestrians from falling debris – is constructed around the building.
Chunks of cement fell from the building facade onto the sidewalk at around 1 a.m. yesterday. Nobody was injured, but the awnings and signage of two businesses were damaged.
The DOB issued a violation to the building owner for “failure to maintain exterior building walls,” posted a temporary vacate order for the first floor and ordered the owner to build the sidewalk shed.
At 11 a.m., the scaffolding was in the process of being constructed. Until it’s finished and the DOB declares the site safe, the building’s three businesses – The DL, Lumber Liquidators and Green Star Foods – will stay closed and pedestrians will have to pass by walking into the street.
UPDATE 7/7/2016 The businesses were allowed to reopen Thursday. Both The DL and Green Star Foods were back in business last night.
