Assembly Candidate Alice Cancel: “I Am Not in Hiding”

Here’s the latest this morning on the campaign to replace Sheldon Silver in Albany. A special election will be held in the 65th Assembly District April 19. The other day, the New York Post ran a story contending that Alice Cancel, the Democratic nominee, has been “in hiding.”  Last night, we received the following statement from Cancel:

In response to New York Post article printed on March 21, 2016 entitled “Democrat running to replace Silver appears to be in hiding.” I want to state on the record that I am not in hiding. Unfortunately, I have been sick and unable to keep to the intense campaign schedule required of all candidates participating in the special election. So simply put, I’ve been trying to balance my health needs with that of the campaign. I am working diligently going door to door to speak to my neighbors about my qualifications and commitment to the district that I lived in for 40 years and represented, in part, for 24 years as the Democratic District Leader.

Cancel will face Yuh-Line Niou (Working Families Party) and Lester Chang (Republican Party) in the special election. Cancel was chosen by activists in the Democratic County committee, with strong support from allies of Sheldon Silver. Her opponents (and the Post) are doing their best to make it a key campaign issue.
