Happening Today: Liquor Permit Hearing, Comedy at the Grocery, Playback Wow

Some of the things happening on the Lower East Side today:

–At 10:30 a.m., NYC Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña joins the New York Immigration Coalition to announce new resources for translation and interpretation. The event takes place at P.S. 126, 80 Catherine St.

Community Board 3’s SLA Committee holds its monthly meeting tonight. Among the liquor permit applications to be considered: A proposal from the “Forgtmenot” team to open a new venue at 49 Monroe St. The operators of “Old Man Hustle” will be seeking to make some changes. Community opposition is expected. Plus the board will hear about plans for a new restaurant in the old Winnie’s space on Bayard Street. CB3 office, 59 East 4th St., 6:30 p.m.

–At 8 p.m. at Arlene’s Grocery, the well-regarded “Comedy at the Grocery” returns. This evening one audience member will receive a makeover!

–Playback Wow’s Winter Showcase takes place at the Wow Cafe Theater, 59 East 4th St. at 7:30 p.m. “Playback is a participatory, improvisational performance form for acting out y/our stories… Members from the audience are invited to tell a personal narrative and have it ‘playbacked’ by the actors.” More info here.
