Here are some of the things transpiring today on the Lower East Side:

–It’s the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year. Starting at 3:30 p.m., there will be a celebration at the Children’s Magical Garden. There will be bulb planting, live music from the Rude Mechanical Orchestra, snacks and beverages from Tiny’s Giant Sandwich Shop. Stanton and Norfolk streets.

–Also at 3:30 p.m., Care for the Homeless and the New York City Rescue Mission will hold their annual Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day observance at 90 Lafayette St. The event is observed to remember those who passed away during the year without stable housing. More info here.

–The next three nights, El Rey Coffee Bar, Russ & Daughters and Morgenstern’s Ice Cream have teamed up for a progressive “Feast of the Seven Fishes.” They collaborated on the menu with award-winning chef David Tanis. Details and tickets here.

–The Columbus, Ohio rockers, Holy Smokes, are at Mercury Lounge tonight at 9:30 p.m. $10.

–At 8 p.m., Brooklyn-based folk-rock artist, Sherman Ewing will perform at the Slipper Room. 100% of the proceeds from the show will go to BARC (the Williamsburg animal shelter), Grand Central Neighborhood Social Services Corporation and Sanctuary for Families. More details on our Calendar.
