Lower East Side Links

Mount Sinai Health System, which owns Beth Israel Hospital, is looking at rebuilding and, possibly downsizing, the Lower East Side facility. Executives recently briefed the de Blasio Administration about their early plans (Politico NY).

NYCHA is facing criticism for a $250,000 study showing that public housing residents do not benefit from gentrification (Daily News).

Steve Rosenthal and Jennifer Gilsen might be forced to close the Magic Shop recording studio on Crosby Street. The husband and wife team moved their music club, the Living Room, from the Lower East Side to Brooklyn last year. They’re now trying to figure out ways to save both businesses (NYT).

The Spring Studio, a space for artists in Soho, is having to move by mid-December. The owner, Minerva Durham. says: “The whole art thing’s over” in SoHo… “I’m not angry. It’s just a different world.” (NYT)

You might remember Hanksy’s “guerrilla artist” happening in a building on East 4th Street in early 2014. The property has now been converted to high-end condos. Residents will receive  framed photos depicting some of the art, “to preserve the building’s legacy.” (NYT)
