In the past few weeks, there’s been quite a bit of activity behind the roll-down gate at 219 East Broadway. If you’ve walked around to the Clinton Street entrance and peeked inside, you’ve seen some familiar faces.
The guys from Big Apple Grocery are opening a new location in the former Joon Cleaners space. A year ago, the bodega closed for renovations at 259 East Broadway, one block to the east. The building in which they were originally located was sold in 2013. New owners R.A. Cohen and Associates proceeded with an extensive renovation project. At the time, owners of the deli said they planned to reopen in the building. But it didn’t work out. Their old space has been listed for $15,000/month.
The new spot was expected to be open at any moment. Final preps were being made when we stopped by yesterday.
