The Essex Street Market is a Lower East Side staple when it comes to fresh food and prepared goods. Meet the vendors in this profile series and swing by the market all month long during May to celebrate 75 years of Essex Street Market.
Co-Owner Ron Budinas with Ira Stolzenberg,
The neighborhood was changing, gentrifying with a lot of younger people coming here, so I wanted to open a juice bar and Tra La La. We also do specialty cakes that I bake. My partner Ira does all the decorating.
The market has a lot of history and it’s unique with the variety of things in here. It’s just gotten better and better and better.
I remember, one time when lightning struck the market and you could see it travel the pipes and it blew up the boiler– unforgettable!
