Russ & Daughters Becomes Community Partner in Our Small Business Survival Campaign

There’s a little more than a week to go in our crowdfunding campaign in support a yearlong reporting project on small business survival. Today we’re very pleased to announce that Russ & Daughters, one of the Lower East Side’s most admired businesses, has signed on as a Community Partner.

The legendary appetizing store, now under the management of fourth generation family owners Niki Russ Federman and Josh Russ Tupper, is going strong after 101 years. The opening of the Russ & Daughters Cafe last year was one of the most successful New York City restaurant debuts of 2014.  The Manhattan Chamber of Commerce named Russ & Daughters the family owned business of the year and a resolution sponsored by State Sen. Daniel Squadron was approved in Albany commemorating its 100th anniversary. The business has a global customer-base but remains deeply rooted in the community after all of these years. As an institution that has weathered the ups-and-downs on the Lower East Side through the generations, they’re passionate about the topic of small business survival. “As the neighborhood continues to develop,” Federman told us yesterday, “there’s a need to protect the small businesses that give us a distinctive character.”  Zarin Fabrics and the ZipCard have also signed on as community partners.

We’re thrilled to have their support and would love to have your help, too, in making this important reporting project a reality.  Click here to see more information and to back our campaign.
