Tonight at the Manny Cantor Center, we’re hosting a panel discussion on the Grand Street Cooperatives — Past, Present & Future.
Moderated by local filmmaker and author Laurie Gwen Shapiro, a lifelong cooperator herself, the evening is a chance to check in on one of the Lower East Side’s most rapidly changing communities. Contentious debate has long been a hallmark of the co-ops, 4500 apartments stretching from Essex Street to the East River. This evening, we’ll hear from several residents from different walks of life about the transformation that was triggered more than a decade ago after the buildings were privatized — and which continues to remake the community to this day.
Malt & Mold will be providing beer, and we’ll be pouring wine (including kosher wine), plus providing snacks. The event begins at 7 p.m., on the 6th floor of the Manny Cantor Center (Educational Alliance), 197 East Broadway.
