As EV Grieve first reported yesterday, another Lower East Side institution is a goner. El Sombrero (The Hat) at 108 Stanton St. closed Saturday night. Since 1984, the restaurant had been a go-to spot for cheap Mexican food and strong margaritas. The closure was no surprise; El Sombrero had been on a downward slide for several years.
Last year, Artichoke Pizza made a run at taking over the prime spot at the intersection of Ludlow and Stanton streets, before backing out. This past month, an entity calling itself Two Almontes Corp. appeared on Community Board 3’s liquor license agenda but the application was temporarily withdrawn.
