As noted earlier today, the New Museum’s Pawel Althamer exhibition opened today. In the past, the Polish artist has channeled the publicity surrounding his exhibitions to help local communities in need. The New Museum show is no exception. As part of the show, which is called “The Neighbors,” the New Museum and Althamer are running a coat drive benefiting the Bowery Mission. The shelter has, of course, been a fixture on the Bowery since 1879. It’s located just two doors away from the museum. Given this winter’s brutal weather, it’s an especially trying time for the Bowery Mission. Anyone who donates a new or gently used coat will get into the exhibition for free. The museum is open Wednesday-Sunday from 11 a.m. Normal closing hours are 6 p.m., except on Thursdays when they stay open until 9.
