Here’s an interesting alternative to the traditional fireworks show. On Wednesday, July 4th, fireflies will light up M’Finda Kalunga Community Garden. The “natural” celebration gets underway at 8 p.m. in the garden, located at Rivington Street in Sara D. Roosevelt Park.
While you’re in the garden, you can check out “operation lady bug!” A week ago, 140,000 of them were set loose in the garden; it’s part of a strategy to fight aphids, the harmful plant pest. M’Finda Kalunga Garden activist K. Webster sent along a few photos from last Sunday’s community event, which delighted a whole lot of kids, and some adults, too. You can read more about the lady bug release on Inhabitat, the LES-based design blog.
Bud Shalala and the Critter Committee of the M’Finda Kalunga Garden will be out in force.
