Khushie Indian Kitchen, a tiny storefront at 139 Essex St. that does a big delivery and takeout business, was shuttered by the health department after an inspection yesterday. The restaurant was cited for seven sanitary violations, four of them ranked “critical.” Those included inadequate prevention of food contamination and the presence or evidence of rats. Less serious violations noted problems with the sewage disposal system and other plumbing issues.
This week’s inspection was the first instance in which Khushie scored less than an “A” according to the city’s restaurant grading system; reports dating back to April 2009 show excellent records.
Businesses closed by the health department are reinspected after proprietors address the issues, and usually subsequently reopen. For more information on ratings for LES eateries, see our Restaurant Report Card archives.
