Weekend Music Picks

Must Read

Here are musician Ken Beasley’s top music picks on the Lower East Side for this weekend:

Julia Darling

JULIA DARLING – Fri, June 3 | 9PM at the Rockwood Music Hall (Stg 2)

New Zealand’s Julia Darling claims that being dropped from a major label was one of the best things that ever happened to her. Always determined to create the music she loved, Darling is finally free to follow her own path and take her place among today’s top pop writers.

With a couple albums worth of tunes equal parts rough rock and sensitive ballad, Darling sings with a confidence that comes from persevering through a tough industry in a tough city, and the relationships speckled throughout. FREE// 196 Allen St.

SONDRE LERCHE Sat, June 4 | 8PM at the Bowery Ballroom

Sondre Lerche

Originally from Norway, Sondre Lerche has been getting his mail in Brooklyn for 6 years now, and he’s been busy the entire time, writing, performing, and recording. Based in Williamsburg, Lerche has relished living among such a wide assortment of artists, and has taken to the opportunity to collaborate with as many as possible. As inventive as he is prolific, Lerche turns out songs that tackle universal subjects like love and loss but does so with fresh ideas in terms of melody structure and arrangement. (Whoa – where’d those wild violins come from??)  $20//6 Delancey St.

THE BANDANA SPLITS – Sun, June 5 | 10PM at The Living Room

The Bandana Splits

To hear the Bandana Splits live is to go back in time and wear a wide smile for the next 45 minutes. The Brooklyn trio, made up of Lauren (Balthrop) Split, Dawn (Landes) Split, and Annie (Nero) Split, sing songs in tight Andrew Sisters style harmonies, and always seem to be having as much fun as the audience. They seamlessly mix a range of old standards, contemporary pop covers, and original compositions – floating their intertwining vocals over gentle ukulele strums, acoustic guitar, and the occasional shaker.  $8//154 Ludlow St.

Splitting his time between performing and producing, contributor Ken Beasley primarily plays with his own roots/rock band, Ken Beasley & Co., as well as the power punk outfit, Missy Sport, while also curating the Underground at the Abrons music series on the Lower East Side.
