Just opened: Taqueria LES, 198 Orchard Street

Today’s Lower East Side food news:

  • After a two-week delay, Taqueria LES is now open at 198 Orchard Street.  The Manhattan offshoot of the popular New Jersey-based restaurant serves authentic tacos ($2.50 each), tortas ($6.25), enchiladas ($7.95) and burritas ($7.95). They’re open noon-midnight Monday-Friday; 11-midnight on weekends.
  • EV Grieve reports: Ray’s Candy Store was shut down by the Department of Health.
  • Landbrot Bakery, 185 Orchard, may be having a tough time getting its liquor license; but their web site has gone live and they’re hiring. Opening anticipated for “late summer.”

  1. I went here last night for a friend’s birthday dinner. Her sister had come in the previous week to ask if a party of 15 could be accommodated. The manager said it was fine. However, last night when we were seated, the manager was so over the top rude to our party. Our bill was $700 – I feel like we spent enough money and ordered in a timely fashion for us to enjoy our dinner at our leisure. But an hour into our meal, the manager started to ignore any additional drink orders and told us to leave because he needed the table. As we were walking out the door, the manager said “the customer is always wrong”. We tipped the waitress & bartender (who were awesome) but will never go back again. We spent a lot of money on so-so food and probably the worst dining experience I’ve ever had. Anywhere.
